These Eyes Still Have It....Apparently!

Marriage tends to make one complacent after awhile. It is a little hard to keep tweaking the same package. So, when unexpectedly, a change is noticed, it adds a lil spark back to the ole fire.

Recently, I overtweezed. You know, going after that one stubborn stray and getting 4-5 good ones in the process. Being the resourceful chick I am, I purchased a Maybelline Easy Define-A-Brow Eyebrow pencil. It was pretty easy to use since I could see EXACTLY where I needed to fill in....I also blended it and matched the other brow....and went on my merry way.

That night, at a rare dinner out. My cute hubby goes "your eyebrows look amazing...what did you do? it looks sexy!" Recovering from the momentary shock, I go - "Hmmm, I haven't done anything different? Maybe a different eye shadow?" and mentally right then and there decided that my mistake will become a permanent fixture in my toolbox.

It just goes to show that maybe I SHOULD take a re look and see what else I can do to enhance some random body part. I keep seeing Valerie Bertinelli on TV touting that THIS could be my season to lose 40 pounds. Well, maybe not. But, It is definitely my season to redecorate...my body that is!

It's Friday ~ It's Chocolate ~ and It's Free!

Alas, I have accepted that my Summer schedule does not allow me the frivolity of languishing at the computer and blogging. I will have to be content with just accomplishing a few necessities such as email and facebook. I also have the date circled on my calendar whence I will reclaim ME time - Don't get me wrong - I adore my children, but I also adore peace and quiet!
This is where the chocolate comes in. I recently discovered that you can actually receive the blissful stuff via the mail....for free. Yep. Just go to www.realchocolate.com on Fridays. 9 a.m. EST and sign yourself up. Pick your favorite and know that it will be shipping to your box. You can use up to 4 emails per household so recruit your husband and any children you wish to share said chocolate with - Me? I am saving this one all for myself.

Sometimes You Just Want To Only Read The Blogs.....

I love Blogs. I have them marked in my Google Reader....and also on my ITouch.....because some blogs NEED to be viewed in full with the pictures accompanying the posts. However, I have clicked off a many a blog because of all the clutter/ads/boxes...They drive me nuts!

I am so happy to have discovered this site. www.baresite.com

This site allows you to type in any web address and it brings it up without all the annoying boxes, ads and clutter that get me into such a tizzy. It only has one drawback and that is the links that are clickable will also only bring up the bare minimum. But, if it is reading you want this is the site for you!

It's Always 5:00 Somewhere.....

I tend to purchase more wine glasses than shoes. True. At least once a week, poolside in my backyard, you can find me with the girls enjoying a relaxing glass while the men watch the children. I am not sure when it started, but my glasses are always a conversation piece. More often than not, they go home as a to-go cup. So, I am well known for my glasses. They have to be unique. I don't want someone to be able to say they also bought the same glass last week. Oh, sometimes, I pick up a glass or 2 at Swoozies, but for the most part I scour specialty shops and craft fairs for the fun, the whimsical, and the downright naughty. If I know it's been a bad week, I do have a set than simply has the word "Bitch" painted all over it. You can open almost any cabinet in my house and find a wine glass.
Being a Sunday, you may not can find your own, so grab your paint pens, head to Target and doodle your own. But, for the thrill of expectation, order a fun one today.

I live in a tropical paradise, and I love it.....except from now until October, all activities should be done befor 11 or after 7. Tell that to 2 boys. 3 if you count Preppy Hubby. Water is the only relief, but it gets a little boring. I found this and am adding to my Christmas list. I actually have been the social mom and filled my pitchers with various natural things like cucumbers, orange or lemon slices and even sprigs of Rosemary (from my yard, natch). Now, THIS would be wonderful. No pulp, just flavor. And cool Water. Bring it on.

Too Cute Not to Buy.....

I just had to repost this adorable plate. I saw it in an ad in the latest Paula Deen magazine.....I LOVE Paula Deen - We at least share one thing in common in that we both have the same accent. I love my accent...but, I digress...
This is the cutest platter I have ever seen - just perfect for deviled eggs...and before you think "Oh, I can't have those" you should try my trick. I don't put the yolk filling in them. I use my favorite flavor of Hummus......Takes all the calories out and leaves only a fun flavor...You can also dress them up by an olive slice on top or curls of cucumber......Would that not be just the best thing to take to a Pot Luck? Lots of Oohs and Ahs to accompany, for sure! There are so many different ways to fill the middle, you can dream up your favorite, too!

Saving Money....Naturally.....

I color my hair. Religiously. Every 4 weeks. Will miss any major milestone if a reschedule is not available. I have done this for longer than you need to know. Would I even want to know how much money has been spent on my head? Probably not. Normally, I am prone to use whatever the salon suggests will make my hair look full, fabulous and also promotes my hair color being resistant to fading. I usually follow through daily up until a week before my appointment. Then, I switch to something protein infused to prepare my hair for the chemical onslaught that will change it from its natural longings to the color of my choosing. Pureology is my latest expensive obsession. And now, I have a new replacement.

I decided that I simply won't have the funds next week to purchase anything except the color for which I am due. The search was on earlier this week for something that would fit my bill yet make my wallet (and hubby) happy. I found it....and I just might have a winner for good.

I picked up some Aveeno Shampoo and Conditioner in their new Nourish line. I chose the Moisture formula - and got protein to boot. I am in love with this find and am sharing with you!

Like any good quest, one must consider all price points. It is always a thrill to capture a bargain but the luxury of having more than just a few dollars to spend provides a completely different feeling of acquisition. Attention to detail paired with the right outfit can make a WOW statement. My little Starfish just might end up being the focal point of the week. There are 6 of us in the group and we have vowed to each purchase a different Starfish for our little "jewelry momento". I have drooled over more than one of these.....wonder which one will end up making it's way to my house?

This is a Southern Girl's Favorite time of year....a beach trip in sight...and my favorite even is about to occur. The Radiance of Summer

It's here....and I can tell! One more full week of school left and the fun begins! My favorite thing about Summer is the fact that daylight lasts longer. That means I actually can dress it up and go out with hubby/friends and enjoy the sparkle of sun instead of running frigidly to the car just to have a little fun. I decided it was time for new makeup. Wandering into Neiman Marcus, I spotted a familiar logo. A bit confused at first, I took a look. Yes, it's true - My favorite jeans have a brand new relative! Rock and Republic now makes makeup! I am now the proud owner of this Blush! The name of my favorite color is exactly where I am in my marriage - when time allows....Seduce. Mommyhood is left at the door and I have already had several friends comment on my new "radiance" so I know it works. The colors in this line are extremely concentrated and the packaging is like a small gift box. Each time I use it feels like a treat just to open it. I played with the eye shadows a bit and have something to look forward to when my current supply runs out....

Time Out for Moms....

Here it is! That day we as moms love...we hope....sometimes the stress of it all can drive you nuts....but let's focus on the positive side of things. I cherish all the drawings, half cooked breakfasts and fights over who gets to give mom her gift first. Most of all, I love being able to decide how the day will be spent. Ah, choices. I told my husband I would like to spend the day in the spa and he looked at me as is I had sprouted horns. Let's just hope it doesn't rain....most of what I want to do is outside. There is work to be done in the yard and what better day to arrange for forced help?
As daughters, don't just sit there. DO SOMETHING. The grocery store flower department can be your best friend. At the very least, give a card. For me, my mom and all those I love who are moms, I am going to follow the stand by rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It works.

Any gift that speaks to a girl's narcissistic side will be a winner. Thus, Photo Holders are a sure bet for a grad gift! My mailbox tells me it's that time again. The onslaught of Graduation Announcements has begun. A Southern Girl knows that B.) all announcements of any kind, shape, form or fashion must be acknowledged. And B.) The Monogram Flower Pot - However, I am not putting Flowers in it! I will head to my closest Walmart and purchase the pot and a can of Spray Paint (matching their future college color is cool) and order THIS MONOGRAM and voila! I am thinking of filling with the towels below for a total gift cost of about 20.00 - You can also fill with monogram note cards (thank yous - let's hope they know that hint-hint) Or, cute items that go with their future college which may be obtained pretty cheap - pencils, stickers, plastic cups, etc.

Carrying on a Tradition

Yes, It's Derby time! But, Southerners know this is one tradition that is always in style. The Mint Julep cup has been on many a Southern Wedding Wish List. Die hard Southerners receive them as gifts from Birth onward and are tucked carefully into a hope chest. I personally love to give a set of 2 monogrammed for a new baby boy. I keep telling my daughter her future hubby will love her for having a set of 24 Juleps ready to go! Perhaps this is a tradition you want to start? I'll raise my glass to that!

Having a Wild Time.....

I found this store/site while on a Las Vegas getaway... Amen Wardy... and have come back again and again! What first attracted me is their amazing fruit (later post) that looks so real its freaky! They have much more of a selection instore than on the web. My secret go-to for fun plates and table settings is this site. They especially go hog wild at holidays but I am planning a small get-together in a few weeks and this is what I am going to use! My theme is really Brown and Pink, but I am always attracted to Zebra Print.....It makes me feel both wild and girly at the same time. Never used Square Plates? Once you do, you will never go round again!

Those Chanel shoes on your feet with their fabulous interlocking logo.....or the car you drive....Hidalgo Rings stacked on my right hand.....Things that say S.N.O.B. (Southern, Not a Bitch) and I have long been noticed and gossiped about.....my Cookies. I have been a fan of Eleni's Cookies long before the public could order them via Neiman Marcus catalog....and when I find substitutes that cost a fraction of my go to source...well, that just fits in with my life right now. Keeping up appearances on less. A few of these can be ordered in only quantities you need which saves money. Others, well....keeping up with my image IS important...and splurging on OOAK is necessary when striving for impression.

A Girl's Big Day.....Part 1

Weddings are a big deal to all girls ~ Suddenly, you're it. You win the prize and the flurry of attention begins. Your mommy's best friends all vy for the opportunity to fete you with every theme shower imaginable.....and it's a contest to just keep your manners intact when every one has an opinion on how to have the perfect wedding. (I can think of a million blog posts coming on this theme).

I am known for my notebook. My wedding notebook, that is. Oh, I am married - happily for several years, but still I add to my wedding notebook....One day, my preppy daughter will meet her preppy husband and have the preppy wedding. I must be ready.

I love old fabrics. The new fabrics just don't have that comfy, well spoken feel of an elegant wedding. They come close, but nothing beats tried and true. Peau de Soie, Alencon Lace, Organza, Tulle, Battenburg Lace, and the words that stir my heart: Dupioni Silk. and Tatted anything. What is Tatting? It's an old process of hands on creation with lace. My mother could do it. I am now appreciative and missed the moment to say so purely because I knew not.

If you are lucky enough to covet your mother's dress, congratulations. If not, then the search for the old begins. Someone else's memories to accompany you down the aisle just ties it all in nicely. If not the dress, the the handkerchief, the coin in the shoe, the pillows and baskets. Thank you eBay and Etsy for vintage finds. Personally, I also love Beverly Bremer's store in Buckhead and Mirror Lake Antiques in Highlands, NC for fabulous finds in this department. Thrift shops should also not be ignored, though I go in heavy disguise when I frequent these places. Just something about it makes me feel like the topic at a morning coffee/gossip girl's gathering. Did you see Preppy Girl in the Thrift shop? OMG, do you think they are having money problems? Anyhoo, it's definitely underrated. Yes, Yes, I know it is being touted as "It's All That" with the recession and all....but at least I am honest!

I have a few things to spotlight. I LOVE LOVE the sew in label for the wedding dress. My own dress is hand sewn with impeccable lettering, but finding someone capable is becoming almost impossible. I still have the lace covered Flower Girl basket my sister made....and the ring bearer pillow crafted with fabric from my Grandmother's dress (Southern women NEVER throw their dress away and even when penniless you never consider selling it - and of course it is carefully preserved in a sealed albeit monogrammed wedding dress box) - I have a true sixpence tucked away in my jewelry box for my daughter's big day. So many details - see why you need to plan even if you have no husband in sight?

I purchased a gorgeous wreath about 5 years ago for my front door - I switch my wreaths according to the season - or month of the year it seems since I switch so often. The Summer wreath saw it's last Summer last year. I also paid 300.00 for it. Like everyone else these days, I don't have 300.00 this year! So, I took myself to Michael's and purchased my own stuff. Then, I ripped all the old decor off of the grapevine wreath and started gluing with the glue gun. I used to do a lot more of this type of stuff before I had children. So, it was either no wreath or see what I could do. I had 2 coupons at Michael's - and the sales clerk took mercy on me and let me check out twice - so I got 40% off the leaves bundle and 25% off the rest of my stuff. It came to 55.00. (I know, I have expensive taste)I was pretty pleased with everything EXCEPT the bow - and I guess I will have to pay about 20.00 for a bigger and nicer bow. But, even so, it will still be cheaper than the one I lusted over last week for 450.00. Thank you, Obama.
Just a quick unofficial note about the history of wreaths in the South. Everybody who is truly southern has them. A hundred years ago they stood for something: like a death in the house, or a house with a quarantine patient in them. I wasn't around then, but I bet that the Southern Chicks were the ones who grew tired of such morbid symbols and decided to make them happy.....Thus, I gladly succumb to the tradition....And, I change them to suit the theme of the moment. I have tied wine glasses on them for cocktail parties and party favors for Birthday Parties. For themed birthday's, we have had farm wreaths, ballet wreaths....you get the picture.
I hope you like my colors. I went for the flame color that Summer makes me think of.(at least one color scheme it brings to mind...but that is another post). I also have an obsession with Lemons.

Never Go Empty Handed

I know I say it all the time but it's true. Manners matter. Southern kindness goes everywhere but especially when going to someone's home for an event or overnight, you should always come bearing gifts. Not huge wrapped presents, but small thoughtful gifts suitable for the occasion. Wine for a dinner party, Coasters or Napkins for a cocktail party (Order monogrammed ones as soon as you receive the invitation!) and just about any sweet momento for an overnight. Case in point. My dear son's darling girlfriend has been to our home twice....the first time she brought some lovely monogrammed soap and napkins....so the second time, a gift was really not necessary but being the true Southern Girl that she is, she brought yummy edible goodies! I simply have to share with you the website because the presentation was over the top! This is something you, too, can do on your own with any store bought bread or cake. The cookies from Edgars Bakery were devine but the Strawberry Poundcake stole my heart with it's adorable Birdy Dish Towel wrap. The bakery has a website http://www.edgarsbakery.com/ and there you can peruse all the mouth watering offerings - they have pictures to further entice you - and there is a wonderful Cake Book you can order as well!! So, even if Bible Study is the only gathering you have coming up, your friends will love you when you arrive with something this cute!

I have an obsession with pottery. The cuter the better. One of my favorite browsing sites is Etsy and one of my favorite things to look for is hand painting! I always look for big bowls , they are the hardest to find. Mugs and Glassware seem to be the most prevalent. The fact that most of my finds on Etsy with a monogam option makes it more appealing to my Southern side. Perhaps if you have some extra time on your hands you can peruse these adorable Etsy shops, too. I know the Masters will be on the Screen at my house and I will be happy as a lark on my laptop....Presence is the greatest gift, right? There I will be right next to hubby, but having my own private shopping binge! Here are my top 3 finds for this morning!

"Mint" to Be....

It's Spring in the South and you can tell it! Dogwoods are right on time sprouting their 4 points just in time for Easter...which they always do...amazing isn't it? Easter comes early, they blossom early....Easter arrives later....so do the blooms on a Dogwood tree...But, another sure sign of Spring in a Southern Girl's home is the arrival of the small clay pots containing the Peppermint Plant. Every Southern Chick knows that the perfect glass of Iced Tea or Punch....and the rite of passage Chicken Salad and Orange Fluff Plate is adorned with a fresh Peppermint leaf. This wonderful plant is super easy to grow, but it likes to take over it's surroundings so it is best in it's own lil pot. You can find sproutlings in your local nursery right about now so put your car in drive and get there! Once your plant is flourishing....around the middle of May, you can pinch off a leaf, wash gently and use as an adornment...or place in your Sun Tea(more about that later)....The leaf can also be gently chewed to obtain the fresh menthol contained in the plant....About as southern as you can get.....it's Mint to be on your best China or in your finest Waterford!

The average southern girl goes to the spa for a manicure at an early age. I have taken mine with me in a stroller. Usually about age 3, southern girls ask to have their nails done, too. And, an obsession is born. Yes, there are periods of rebellion as the tween years progress, but by the beginning of the teen years, it is a necessity to have the all important manicure. There are rules for this, also. It's all about the pinks....the occasional red is permitted but for the most part, any shade of pink will do. Geranium, Poppy, Coral...to the range of Cotton Candy and Pink Lemonade....To pick the perfect color, a good Southern girl uses these time tested Southern influences to gauge the color. Never will you see a true southern princess flashing shades of night or blood on her lily white fingers....Cuticles matter so even if using fakes (gasp, but it happens) you should always ask for a manicure before any nailwork. We happen to believe that any polish will do when a weekly appointment is part of the schedule, but abhor anything that costs less than 5.00....Enjoy our Picks for the preppiest polish...because Summer is headed our way!

The First of Many Monogram Posts

What can I say? I feel so bold as to state that monograms must have been invented by a Southern girl. At any rate, true southern women and the men who love them fully understand that anything that can be monogrammed must be monogrammed. Triple full monograms are best, but if you must cheat and use one initial (permitted when space is an issue) at least make the effort. I personally follow a few rules for monogramming myself. They are: in no particular order:

1. Middle initial should be the Last Name and larger than the side initials.
2. For personal items, that person's own initials should be used.
3. For household items, the head of the household should be used. For instance, if Muffy Anne Edwards is married to Jeffrey Allen Edwards then the monogram would be JEA for all household places such as the guest bathroom. I know, but get over it.

4. Monograms on towels have a definite measurement for placement they should follow. You can read all about it here. My pet peeve was realized when I took towels to a small town monogram shop and they did the initials between the border and not above it ...ugh....if you are going to monogram it, at least do it right.

5. Script for girls and Block for boys...nuff said.

6. Repeating: Single initials are not Southern, but are at times necessary.

Like I said, this is the first of many posts on monograms, but I am going to put a few of my favorite links here......I would be remiss if I didn't state that I completely miss my monogrammed Pappagallo Espedrilles....and while I was thrilled to see the Pappagallo shop in Atlanta remains open, they don't carry them anymore. Boy, are they missing out on sales!

Taking It To The Extreme

As a child I was exposed to Sweet Tea at a very early age....My own children were allowed to drink it out of the bottle. It was just the drink of choice and we didn't think twice about it. Travels across the USA contributed to our lust for the stuff after we discovered that outside of the core Southern states, Sweet Tea is just not offered. Try to order one and you are met with a pursed forehead and a bewildered look. You learned to doctor it up a bit, but it doesn't come close to the real thing even if it works to satisfy the need to wash food down while on the road.....Fast forward to adulthood and the latest "twist" on Sweet Tea. Some ingenious folks in South Carolina have created a Sweet Tea flavored Vodka and it is sweeping through our young adults like crazy. I was skeptical at first, but one taste of the stuff and we were hooked! Add a lemon and lemonade and Shucks, it's a new Southern favorite! We even found one recipe that included Mojito Mint syrup as well. That is enough to make you pull out your Madras Shorts and shag. No doubt it will find it's way onto many a menu for the required Southern gathering be it morning or night. Right up there with Mimosas, Magnolias and such. I will be raising my glass like the true Southern girl I am. Cheers!

Something Southern and Proper

Today I dropped by a trunk show hosted by Southern Proper. It was more fun than a tea party....The girls and I just clicked right off the bat! Even if I was just buying for my boys, I had a blast! This company makes me smile....something about that cotton...It is such fun to watch this company grow.....if you don't know about them, please visit their website to learn more...it's a fun story and if you have boys, you must go shopping. They are also just beginning to add some girl products for the preppy in you with adorable fitted polos and headbands (hello, Muffy!) and I LOVE their new tee shirts appropriately named Sweet Tees - now that is Southern!

Welcome to My World!

Yes, I have a lot to say! First off, an introduction. I am southern born, bred, raised, educated, married and loyal. I have an affinity for all things about the South and will use this forum to sing their praises. I don't wear white after Labor Day or before Easter. I still respect my elders. I believe tea should be served cold, sweet and with a fresh mint leaf. Though, it sure does taste good with a lil orange juice added. I believe the minimal Birthday celebration should be 3 days, and that Holidays should be topped off with parties and loads of decorations. Food should be served in courses and on good china with cotton napkins. Monograms are a must.
I hope you will find both amusement and admiration as we visit together....and perhaps the occasional must have product as I review them. Now, sit back and watch the fun begin!
